The Department of Geophysical Sciences and its affiliated Centers sponsor a variety of seminar series each academic
quarter reflecting the interdisciplinary research interests of the department.
Fridays in the Department of the Geophysical Sciences
On Fridays, members of the department get together for two, one-hour department seminars routinely attended by undergraduates, graduates,
researchers and faculty. Both seminars are held in Hinds Geophysical Sciences room 101. The two events are separated by tea in the
Goldsmith room.

Additional Seminars and Events in the Department
Monday
- Climate/Paleoclimate Journal Club
A weekly seminar devoted to reviewing topics in climate and paleoclimate. Students, post-docs and faculty take turns presenting
papers from the recent literature as well as their own ongoing research. Some quarters have specific themes while others cover a
wider range of topics. Information about seminars and weekly readings can also be found by contacting David Archer
(d-archer@uchicago.edu). This seminar is held in the
Goldsmith Room on the first floor of Hinds Geophysical Sciences (HGS) at 12:30pm most Mondays.
Tuesday
- GeoUnion
Geounion (an undergraduate organization) organizes five seminars per
quarter covering a range of topics in the Geophysical Sciences. Seminars are geared toward exposing undergraduates to a variety
of different research in the geophysical sciences, but faculty and graduate students are welcome to attend. Held at 5:30pm during
even number weeks of the quarter in the Goldsmith Room on the first floor of HGS. Information about seminars and other geounion
events can be found by subscribing to the list host.
Thursday
- Noon Baboon
A weekly brown-bag meeting of students, faculty and post-docs drawn from across the Department and University
because of a shared interest in "paleo", this is a forum for members of the community to give informal talks and get
feedback on projects in progress or development, or, in the absence of a volunteer speaker, discuss papers from recent
journal issues. Held at either 12:00 or 12:30, depending on general consensus that quarter, in the second floor lunchroom
of Hinds. To receive announcements, subscribe to the list host:

-
EvMorph
A weekly seminar sponsored by the interdivisional, inter-institutional Committee on Evolutionary Biology, with talks
(mostly) by visiting speakers on the subject of Evolutionary Morphology as defined very broadly. Speakers
(and audience members) come from many backgrounds, including evolutionary biology, anatomy, biomechanics, ecology,
paleontology, molecular biology, systematics, conservation biology, history/philosophy of science, and more -- the
full breadth of the CEB, which is a degree-granting unit of the University administered by the Division of Biological
Sciences but including faculty from across the University, the Field Museum, Brookfield Zoo, Lincoln Park Zoo, and
Argonne National Labs. To be placed on the mailing list or for more information contact
mpolk@uchicago.edu. This seminar is held in the Goldsmith Room on the first
floor of Geophysical Sciences at 7:30pm, Thursdays.
