However, the data exhibit fluctuations on time scales of a few weeks that are missing from the standard model. The dotted line was generated using the "NO3 Restoring" model, in which the surface NO3 concentrations are tied to the observations (Figure 9). The pCO2 predicted by the restoring model show the same fluctuations that are seen in the data. We assume that the observed NO3 and pCO2 fluctuations are caused by patchiness in the upper ocean.
