Position open: postdoctoral research fellow

The Department of the Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow in optical spectroscopy for instrument development for gas-phase isotopic measurements. Applicants should have strong laboratory chemistry or optics experience, previous experience with experimental design, and PhD in Chemistry, Physics, or related field. Background in tunable diode lasers and/or infrared absorption spectroscopy is encouraged. Applicants should demonstrate independence and a broad interest in all phases of instrument development from engineering to science.

The target science for the projet is use of isotopic tracers for aerosol and microphysics studies, with the measurements to be taken at a facility in Karlsruhe, Germany. Some international travel will be required, with deployments of approximately three weeks duration, once per year, for instrument integration and measurement, along with shorter visits to collaborating laboratories. Language skills and comfort with travel are a plus. The timeline for first measurements is approximately one year, after which the postdoc will be expected to present results at conferences and in peer-reviewed publications.

Applicants should email a CV, statement of research interests, and names and contact information for three references, to: Elisabeth Moyer, Asst. Professor, Department of the Geophysical Sciences (moyer (at) uchicago.edu). The University of Chicago is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
