The best use of AI to date?

Graduate student Yaoxuan Zeng and associate professor Malte Jansen won the 2024 Geosci Snow competition. By asking ChatGPT (prof. Jansen) and ERNIE bot (Zeng), they both predicted two months in advance when Chicago would see its first snow of the season.

Was it luck, or do large language models hold real value in predicting the weather at seasonal timescales? Is there any sensitivity to the chat box entry? Another participant asked ChatGPT and got the wrong date. Regardless, Yaoxuan and Malte certainly used the right tools for the 2024 challenge!
