Mr. Tornado: One Man’s Pursuit to Understand the Deadliest Storms

May 02, 2020

PBS has released a documentary about the life and work of Prof. Tetsuya 'Ted' Fujita (1920-1998), cataloging his discovery of microbursts and effort to quantify tornado damage. He became Associate Prof. in the Department in 1962, Professor in 1965 and was named the Charles Merriam Distinguished Service Professor in 1989. He retired from teaching in 1990, but continued to research meteorological phenomena until his death. His legacy lives on in his eponymous, now 'Enhanced' Fujita scale, and in the countless lives his pioneering work has saved.
