Biography

Pronouns: They/them

From growing up fascinated by the invertebrates habitating the swamps of southeast Texas, Daniel received a BA in biological sciences from the University of Chicago, where they fell in love with the microbial world. At Georgia Tech, they completed a PhD in Quantitative Biosciences working with Joshua Weitz on molecular biological lenses into marine microbial resource exchange as well as theoretical evolutionary and ecological models of phytoplankton and their viruses. After finishing their PhD, Daniel became an Omidyar Postdoctoral Fellow at the Santa Fe Institute. During their PhD and postdoc, Daniel spent equal time on bioinformatic analyses of large-scale marine microbial datasets, theoretical dynamical models and simulation, and has spent well over 100 days at sea conducting field reasearch.

Research Interests

Daniel's research interests now include the evolutionary ecology of marine viruses, coupled ecological-biogeochemical models, biophysical scaling phenomena, and biophysical oceanographic interactions.
