Postdoctoral Scholar – Quantifying and Understanding Uncertainties in Regional Impacts of Solar Geoengineering
The University of Chicago and the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) are looking for highly motivated postdoctoral fellows to join a new project funded by The University of Chicago’s Climate Systems Engineering Initiative that seeks to quantify and understand uncertainties in regional impacts of solar geoengineering. Two positions are available.
The first position focuses on quantifying uncertainties related to atmosphere-ocean coupling. It will examine how uncertainties in predicted sea surface temperature patterns affect the regional response to stratospheric aerosol injection over land and advance mechanistic understanding of regional impacts. This position will be primarily based at The University of Chicago with extended visits of up to 4 months per year to MPI-M.
The second position focuses on quantifying uncertainty due to small-scale parameterized physics by generating the first solar geoengineering perturbed parameter ensemble with the ICON XPP model. The ensemble will be used to bound physical-science uncertainties of regional impacts. This position will be primarily based at MPI-M.
The postdocs will join a team that includes Prof. Tiffany Shaw, Prof. Sarah Kang, and Dr. Ulrike Niemeier. Project team meetings will occur annually at the AGU or EGU.
This position is benefits-eligible, and information regarding benefits can be found here: https://clients.garnett-powers.com/pd/uchicago/
Minimum qualifications:
- Ph.D. in climate science, engineering, applied math or physics, or a related field.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience with climate data and models.
- Experience with climate physics.
Application Process:
Candidates interested in the first position should submit a complete curriculum vitae that includes a list of publications and contact information of at least three references as well as a statement of past research and current interests (max 1 page) to tas1@uchicago.edu.
