Our Mission
Our department is driven by a dual mission: to expand fundamental knowledge that satisfies humanity's boundless curiosity and to address critical societal challenges, such as the impact of climate change on various populations and ecosystems. The Department of the Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago is dedicated to cultivating a dynamic academic environment. Our goal is to nurture scholars who will be at the forefront of knowledge creation and dissemination, shaping the future of education. We value the unique perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences that each member brings to our department, and we are steadfast in our commitment to an environment where scientists from all walks of life can excel and contribute meaningfully.
We acknowledge historical challenges and biases in STEM fields that have excluded many talented individuals. Although there has been significant progress in recent years, we are continuously working to ensure that these outdated biases and practices do not hinder the scientific and academic development of any individual. Our proactive steps include enhancing access to geosciences for underrepresented groups, fostering a welcoming atmosphere for all community members, and actively engaging with residents of Chicago’s South Side. As a leading institution in an urban setting, the University of Chicago values its strong connections with local communities. These relationships play a vital role in our research and educational endeavors.
Our faculty, staff, postdocs, graduate, and undergraduate students actively engage in initiatives that promote inclusivity within the scientific field. These efforts are not just about fostering a diverse scientific community; they are about ensuring that the pursuit and benefits of scientific inquiry are accessible and relevant to all. Some of our ongoing efforts within the department and the broader community can be seen under the Activities tab.
