  • Megan Mansfield Awarded Harper Fellowship.

    Graduate student Megan Mansfield has been awarded a William Rainey Harper Dissertation Fellowship for the 2020-2021 academic year by the PSD, awarded for significant achievement as the completion of her doctoral degree approaches. Megan's research is chiefly concerned with the observation and characterization of exoplanet atmospheres. Congratulations, Megan!

  • Olson’s work covered in UChicago News

    T.C. Chamberlin Postdoc Stephanie Olson's research on the impact of exoplanet ocean circulation on nutrient cycling, biological productivity, and remote biosignatures was covered in UChicago News (click the link to read the article). Assistant Prof. Jansen and Associate Prof. Abbot were co-authors on the work. Stephanie will be starting a faculty job at Purdue in a couple months. Congratulations Stephanie!

  • Mr. Tornado: One Man’s Pursuit to Understand the Deadliest Storms

    PBS has released a documentary about the life and work of Prof. Tetsuya 'Ted' Fujita (1920-1998), cataloging his discovery of microbursts and effort to quantify tornado damage. He became Associate Prof. in the Department in 1962, Professor in 1965 and was named the Charles Merriam Distinguished Service Professor in 1989. He retired from teaching in 1990, but continued to research meteorological phenomena until his death. His legacy lives on in his eponymous, now 'Enhanced' Fujita scale, and in the countless lives his pioneering work has saved.
