Granted to students who will be entering the last 12-18 months of dissertation work, Harper Fellowships are one of the highest honors given to graduate students at the University of Chicago.   • Macdonald and MacAyeal Publish Article on Seasonal Evolution of Supraglacial Lakes

    Geophysical Sciences graduate student Grand Macdonald and Geophysical Sciences Professor Doug MacAyeal's recent research on Antarctic ice-shelf instability has been published in the most recent volumne of the Annals of Glaciology. They argue that the dimunition of the volume of lake water in July and August within lakes on Greenland's floating termini are caused by the transportation of meltwater into the ocean by river systems.

  • Checlair’s Work On Tidally-Locked Planets Receives Public Attention

    Graduate student Jade Checlair investigated whether tidally locked planets in habitable zones could ever be completely covered by ice, and her research has recently received popular attention online. Jade argues that tidally-locked planets could avoid a global ice-age because it would be difficult to completely glaciate the planet and they would possess a functioning silicate-weather feedback.
